Bucknell's Tolli named Female Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Bucknell junior Caroline Tolli was voted the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned one of the 10 spots on the Women's Indoor Track and Field Academic All-Patriot League Team, announced Tuesday. The awards were voted on by indoor track and field sports information directors in the Patriot League.

The Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The Women's Indoor Track and Field Academic All-Patriot League Team is comprised of 10 student-athletes.

Joining Tolli on the Academic All-League Team are American sophomore Julia Sullivan, Army senior Christie Johnson, Bucknell senior Sarah Bella, Bucknell junior Sasha Hornock, Bucknell sophomore Emily Waksmunski, Holy Cross senior Erin Linnehan, Lehigh senior Katherine Pierce, Lehigh junior Lauren Pietrosh, Navy junior Brigid Byrne.

Tolli lands on the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the third time in her career with a perfect 4.00 GPA in English and Spanish. She is the only member of the team to have a 4.00. Tolli is a four-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and a four-time member of Bucknell’s Dean’s List.

The junior from Lockport, N.Y., helped the Bison win the indoor championship with her individual title in the 1,000. She finished first in a time of 2:56.37. Tolli also placed fifth in the mile with a career-best time of 4:58.62.

Byrne, Linnehan and Bella also won individual titles at the indoor championships. Byrne led the way in the 5,000, finishing in 17:08.16. She has a 3.89 GPA in English. Linnehan, who has a 3.45 GPA in political science, won the 60 hurdles for the Crusaders, finishing in 8.83 seconds. Bella took first in the shot put (47-0¾) and earned a spot on the Academic All-League Team with a 3.57 GPA in biology.

Pietrosh and Hornock also left the championships with gold medals as part of winning relay teams. Pietrosh, who has a 3.88 GPA in marketing, won multiple relay titles — the DMR (12:02.21) and the 3,200 relay (8:59.60). Hornock was a part of the winning 1,600 relay team. She has a 3.50 GPA in biology.

Pierce, an IDEAS (Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts and Sciences) major with a 3.57 GPA, was the runner-up in the 5,000 with a time of 17:13.00.

Sullivan (3.84, environmental studies), Johnson (3.376, environmental engineering) and Waksmunski (3.89, civil engineering) round out the Academic All-League Team.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
