Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship - Final Recap
Feb. 24, 2008 2008 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship Page Lewisburg, Pa. - The Bucknell women and Navy men were honored as the 2008 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Champions on Sunday evening at Bucknell's Gerhard Fieldhouse. The Bison women have now won seven-consecutive indoor titles and 12 overall, while the Midshipmen captured their third indoor title. The Midshipmen finished the '08 meet with 188.5 overall points, and were followed by Bucknell (138), Army (108), Colgate (55.5), American (51), Lafayette (39), Lehigh (35) and Holy Cross (5). The Bucknell women finished the meet with 173 overall points, and were followed by Lafayette (146), Navy (87), Army (75), Lehigh (49), Holy Cross (46), Colgate (28) and American (16). A total of 27 events crowned champions on the final day of competition, highlighted by several relay races and several field events as well. In the men's and women's shot put event, it was no surprise that the top-seeds on each side took home the gold. On the men's side, Navy senior Darryl Hunter won his third-career shot put title by reaching a distance of 17.16m. The distance is a new Patriot League Championship Meet record. For the women, it was Lafayette's Osasumwen Izevbigie who took home her first career shot put title, as she reached a distance of 14.67m. The distance was a season-best for Izevbigie. The men's and women's triple jump finals also took place on Sunday afternoon. Navy's Dante Marshall was crowned the champion on the men's side with a distance of 14.98m, and was followed by Bucknell's Kyle Anthony (14.96m) and Army's Alfred McDaniel (14.51m). The women's title was taken home by Angela Jenkins of Army, who jumped a distance of 11.83m. Second place went to Bucknell's Amy Mantush, who reached a distance of 11.80m, and third place went to Lafayette's Emily Cholak with a distance of 11.58m. The fifth and final field event of Sunday was the men's pole vault. Bucknell's David Mante thrilled the home crowd with his second-consecutive title in the event. Mante reached a height of 4.96m, a season best, to take home the gold. Lehigh's Khalil Uqdah took home second place with a height of 4.65m and Navy's Kraegen Bramer was third with a height of 4.50m. Two sets of relay awards were handed out on Sunday afternoon, as the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) and 4x400m relays took place. In the DMR, it was the American men and Bucknell women who took home first-place accolades in the event. American finished the race in a time of 10:00.23, while second place went to Colgate in a time of 10:10.65. Bucknell's women took the title in a time of 12:16.33, almost ten seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Lafayette (12:26.12). In the men's 4x400m relay, Navy edged Army at the finish line to take home another relay gold. The Mids crossed the tape in a time of 3:18.59, while the Black Knights came in just behind them with a time of 3:18.78. Third place went to Colgate with a time of 3:20.82. The women's race, though not as close, was still just as entertaining. The team from Army was first with a time of 3:54.57, while Bucknell was second (3:56.23) and Holy Cross third (3:58.36). The men's 60m hurdles title was awarded to Navy's Ronald Belany, while the women's title was given to Lafayette freshman Janica Austin. Belany, who won the event in 2007, finished in a time of 8.12 seconds to take the victory. Teammate Matthew Hanley was second in a time of 8.20 seconds and Bucknell's Kevin MacLeod was third in 8.29 seconds. Austin ran the race in a scorching time of 8.67 seconds, which sets a new Patriot League Championship Meet record. Colgate's Curran Knox finished second with a time of 9.01 seconds and Holy Cross's Dannielle Meder was third in 9.03 seconds. The men's 3000m race featured an American sweep as Carlos Jamieson and Cathleen Ford each ran away with victories. Jamieson, who had already won the 5000m race on Saturday, finished the race in a time of 8:16.68 to earn the victory. Navy's John Olsen was second (8:19.02) and Bucknell's Wallace Campbell was third (8:20.28). Ford ran the race in a time of 10:01.34 and was followed by Colgate's Stacey Marion (10:06.90) and Navy's Amy Watson (10:07.97). Colgate's Lyle Tolli earned individual titles in both the one-mile run and the 1000m. Tolli ran the mile in a time of 4:12.21 to take the title, while he finished the 1000m in a time of 2:30.05. American's Brendan Fennell was second in the mile with a time of 4:12.79 and Navy's Benjamin Kozy was third in a time of 4:12.86. Army's Stephen Kraus earned a silver medal in the 1000m with a time of 2:30.40, while Lafayette's Pete Reynolds was third in a time of 2:30.42. Navy's Vicky Moore was named champion in the 1000m with a time of 2:58.02 and also finished second in the mile to Bucknell's Erin Cranmer-Hart. Cranmer-Hart ran the mile in a time of 5:04.84 to take home the title for the second-consecutive year. The 800m run was won by Navy's Craig Meekins (1:53.40) on the men's side, and Lehigh's Sarah Serwo (2:18.01) on the women's side. Navy's Paul Harris finished second for the men, while Bucknell's Victoria Gilbert was second in the women's race. In the 500m, Lehigh earned another individual title when Scott Robinson crossed the finish line in a time of 1:04.85. Bucknell's Megan Hathaway was first for the women in the 500m with a time of 1:16.75. In the men's 400m, it was a clean Bucknell sweep on the medal stand, as Kerry Boyle (48.52 seconds), Guy Castranova (49.21) and Kevin MacLeod (49.32) finished 1-2-3. In the women's 400m, Lafayette's Asia Hollis earned the victory for the Leopards in a time of 58.51. Finishing in a second-place tie was Army's Lesa Boyd and Lehigh's Latasha Watson. The 200m dash titles went to Lafayette's Kyle Clayton and Army's Ebony Thomas. Clayton ran the race in a time of 22.22 seconds, while Thomas broke the tape in a time of 24.99 seconds. The final event that gave out medals on Sunday was the 60m dash, as Clayton and Thomas each earned their second individual titles of the meet. Clayton, who set a Patriot League Championship Meet record in the semis of the event (6.86 seconds), finished the finals in a time of 6.88 seconds, while Thomas ran the final in a time of 7.69 seconds. All first-place finishers at the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship are designated as earning First-Team All-Patriot League status, while all second-place finishers are named Second-Team All-Patriot League.
