Navy Men, Bucknell Women Lead at Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships

BOSTON - The Navy men and Bucknell women each hold first place after Saturday's action at the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center, but 14 of the 20 finals on each side are still to come on Sunday.

Navy leads on the men's side with 65 points, with Bucknell coming in second place with 46. Army West Point (38), Boston University (36), Lehigh (19), Lafayette (12), American (9), Holy Cross (6) and Colgate (3) round out the standings.

The women's competition is even closer, with Bucknell (55) just a half-point ahead of Lehigh (54.50) and host Boston University (45) not far behind. Holy Cross (30.50), Navy (26), Army West Point (17), Colgate (3), Lafayette (2) and American (1) complete the standings through Saturday.

Navy has won three of the six completed events on the men's side, with Tyler Russell setting a Patriot League Championship record in the high jump with a mark of 2.13 meters. John Campbell won the weight throw for the Mids, while the team of Roberto Swersky, Justin Hyytinen, Steve Schroeder and Nicholas Palermo held off Army West Point by less than a second to win the 4 X 800m relay. Boston University had two events winners as Kevin Thomas crossed the line first in the 5,000-meter run and David Oluwadara captured the long jump, while Lehigh's Trevor Knowles placed first in the heptathlon.

Boston University has three of the six winners on the women's side thus far. Shelby Stableford took first place in the 5,000-meter run, Lovie Burleson captured the long jump and Catherine Sampson won the pentathlon. Bucknell's Sophia Nnadi took first place in the weight throw while the Bison squad of Emma Harris, Seline Tan-Torres, Christine Bendzinski and Sarah Chandler placed first in the 4 X 800m relay in a time of 8:53.53, setting a Patriot League Championship record and narrowly topping Holy Cross by less than a tenth of a second. Lehigh's Courtney Avery won the high jump for the third straight year with a mark of 1.81 meters, breaking her own Patriot League Championship record of 1.75m set each of the last two years.

 

 

Sunday's action features finals in 11 events on the track and three in the field, with all of the track events carried live on Patriot League Network beginning at Noon.
