ANNAPOLIS, Md. - With day one of the 2006 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championship in the books, Lehigh senior K.T. Hessler (Walkersville, Md.) came away the winner of the women's pentathlon with 3320 points, in the only event contested on Friday at Halsey Fieldhouse on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy. Second and third place in the pentathlon were earned by Bucknell athletes, giving the Bison an early lead in the women's team standings at 14 points.

Hessler was the winner of the high jump with a 1.63m mark and came in third in the 800m race with a time of 2:26.40.

Bucknell's Nina Reinhardt (Northport, N.Y.), last year's pentathlon winner, came in second with 3286 points, winning the long jump event with a 5.36m leap. Fellow Bison Danielle Todman (Plainfield, N.J.) finished third with 3267 points, coming in first in both the 55m hurdles (8.29) and shot put (12.53m).

The fifth event of the pentathlon, the 800m race, was won by Holy Cross' Alexandria Swiatocha (Mahopac, N.Y.) in a time of 2:24.60.

Behind Bucknell's 14 team points on the women's side is Lehigh with 10 points, Navy with five and Army with two.

The first day of the Patriot League championship also included four of the men's seven events for the heptathlon. In the lead after four events is Army's Brandon Lewis (Leesburg, Fla.) with 2811 total points. Lewis was the winner of the long jump event with a 6.84 leap. In second is Lehigh's Vaclav Malek (Rockville, Md.), the first place finisher in the high jump (2.04m), while Army's David Brown (El Paso, Texas) sits in third after winning the 55m dash (6.73). The winner of the shot put was Lehigh's Craig Percopo (Holmdel, N.J.) with a 14.03m mark.

The men's heptathlon will pick up at 8:45 a.m. tomorrow morning, with the 55-meter high hurdle, pole vault and 1000-meter events to be completed. Individual event competition gets underway at 11 a.m. with the field events and 1 p.m. with the track events.
