WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships opened up at Gillis Field House on Friday, and once again it was Lehigh junior Brooke Astor taking center stage on day one by claiming the women's pentathlon title for the second year in a row.
Astor won the event with a score of 3,346, finishing ahead of Bucknell's Michaela Read (3,119) and Holy Cross' Sarah Dahlstrom (3,098). Lehigh's Gabrielle Warde (3,064), Army's Lindsay Danilack (2,997) and Navy's Sierra Parks (2,912) followed to also score points for their teams.
Astor won the 60-meter hurdles and long jump and earned first-team All-Patriot League honors by virture of her top finish. Read received second-team All-League status for placing as the runner-up.
Lehigh claimed the early women's points lead as Astor and Warde combined for 14 points. Bucknell follows with eight, while Holy Cross has six, Army two and Navy one.
On the men's side, the first day of action included four events in the heptathlon. Lehigh's Ryan Paquin has 2,711 points, just ahead of Navy's Christopher Fowler at 2,709 after competitions in 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump. Paquin won both the 60-meter dash and long jump, while Fowler claimed the shot put. The heptathlon concludes on Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run.
Additional finals on Saturday include the men and women's weight throw, long jump and high jump in the field, and the men and women's 5,000-meter run and 4 X 800 relays on the track.
