Annapolis, Md. - The Navy men's outdoor track and field team (3-0) had a successful spring home opener in defeating Colgate, American and Maryland in a quad meet at a chilly Ingram Field on Saturday afternoon. The Mids posted four IC4A qualifying marks and won 13 of 19 events.
"Given the coolness of the day, I think we had a good overall performance," head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "We had some outstanding performances in the hammer throw today. They did a great job. We also did pretty well in the sprint areas today and I think we are heading in the right direction."
Navy had a trio of throwers hit the IC4A-qualifying standard in the hammer throw. Senior Nicholas Porter established a new personal record with a 182-7 to win the event. Junior Christopher Ricks upped his season-high mark with a second-place showing of 176-7. Senior Patrick Norwood also posted a new PR with his IC4A mark of 175-8, good for third place.
Freshman Zachary Duncavage continued his strong outdoor performance in the discus throw by hitting yet another IC4A mark of 157-10. Junior Aaron Bankus won the javelin with a distance of 174-9.
Junior Chris Boniwell took first place in the shot put with a season-best distance of 47-3½ and senior Jeffrey Steinmetz placed second with a season-best 47-1½.
Sophomore Dean Black began a strong defense of his 2010 Patriot League 3,000m steeplechase title. Black won the event with a time of 9:19.71, placing 24 seconds faster than the second-place runner.
Junior Alexander Jackson won the 200 with a career-best time of 21.97. Junior Isaac Teichgrab was second in the event with a 22.11. Sophomore Kolton Kempel won the 400m with a time of 49.82.
Freshman Patrick Edmond placed second in the 100m with a hand-timed performance of 10.36. Junior Fleet White won the 400m hurdles (57.21) and sophomore Chris Folwer was second (58.14).
Freshman Randon McKain won the long jump with a distance of 20-7¾ and also took first in the triple jump (44-7). Sophomore Rand Montermini won the high jump with a clear of 6-4½. Sophomore John Smith cleared 13-9¼ to win the pole vault.
The 4x400m relay team of senior David Ash, junior Lucas Connelly, sophomore Joshua Shaw and sophomore Travis Fanning won the event with a time of 3:23.02.
Navy will next compete at Princeton's Sam Howell Invitational next weekend.
