ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Fresh off its second straight appearance in the Patriot League Tournament finals and a 20-3 record, Navy women's tennis head coach Keith Puryear was named the Wilson / ITA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year for his efforts.
Hired to lead the Navy women's tennis program it its infancy from a club program to a NCAA Division I program that just completed its third varsity season, Puryear has guided the Mids to the Patriot League Tournament championship match in each of the last two seasons after reaching the Patriot League semifinals in their first varsity season in 2010.
Over the last two years, Navy has posted a combined 42-13 (.764) record, including a 20-3 record this past spring. The Mids started the 2012 campaign by winning their first 11 matches and were knocking on the door of the national rankings in mid-March. Navy was rewarded by being named the top seed for the Patriot League Tournament in April.
Puryear, who needs just two wins for 500 in his career (498-320 / .609) and owns a 55-17 (.764) record in just three seasons at Navy, has built the program with stellar recruiting classes. His second class (this year's group of rising juniors) was named one of the top 25 mid-major classes in America, while his third class (rising sophomores) was named an honorable mention top 25 mid-major class. This year's incoming incoming group figures to be back in the top 25.
Navy will lose no players from the 2012 squad, returning all six singles starters.
