Army Falls to Alabama in NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Army women’s tennis season came to a close on Friday with a 4-0 loss at No. 8 Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Championship. The Black Knights end the season with a 22-7 record for their fifth consecutive 20-win season. T

he Crimson Tide (18-4) won the inaugural meeting between the two programs for their sixth win in NCAA Tournament history (6-10). UA captured the doubles point quickly to move ahead 1-0. The 14th-ranked doubles pair in the country, Alex Guarachi and Courtney McLane, defeated the Black Knights’ Della and Elle Taylor, 8-1, at No. 1. The sisterly duo finishes their first year as a doubles pair with a team-best 27-12 record, including 19-9 in duals.

Taylor Lindsey and Yasmine Ebada handed Army sophomores Margaret Iliev and Carly Riney just their second loss of the season with an 8-2 defeat at No. 3 to clinch the point. Iliev and Riney wrap up 2012 with a 15-2 dual record for the highest winning percentage on the team (.882).

The Crimson Tide stretched their lead to 2-0 after Alex Clay defeated Iliev, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4. Guarachi, ranked No. 52 on the ITA singles chart, pushed the lead to 3-0 by knocking off Army’s Jamila Paul 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2. The loss halted Paul’s 15-match unbeaten streak, ending the season with a 21-8 record.

Antonia Foehse clinched the match for the home team by defeating Della Taylor, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. Taylor concludes her sophomore campaign with a 20-10 record.

Army falls to 0-12 all-time in NCAA Championship matches, including 12 consecutive shutouts.

With the win, Alabama advances to the second round for the second straight season. The Crimson Tide will face Georgia Tech on Saturday, after the Yellow Jackets defeated Oklahoma State, 4-1, in the day’s first match.
