CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Holy Cross senior Emily Marr was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women’s tennis and earned a spot on the six-member Academic All-League team, it was announced Wednesday.

Voting was conducted by the League’s women’s tennis sports information directors who could not cast a ballot for their own student-athletes.

Marr was the only senior on the squad that also includes a pair of juniors and three sophomores. The rest of the team is comprised of Army sophomore and Patriot League Player of the Year Jamila Paul, junior Daria Tuzhikova of Bucknell, Holy Cross junior Jessica DeSimone, sophomore Liza Blank of Lafayette and Lehigh sophomore Jill Sloand.

Marr makes history as the first Crusader named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women’s tennis. She posted an overall record of 11-5 on the season, including a 1-1 mark against League opposition. Marr recorded a 14-8 ledger in doubles on the year as well, teaming with fellow senior Carolyn Chandley. Marr is a two-time team captain and helped guide the Crusaders to their best dual-match record in six years. Between fall and spring competition, Holy Cross finished with an 11-5 record.

Academically, Marr carries a 3.59 cumulative grade-point average at Holy Cross while double majoring in sociology and political science. A Jefferson, Mass., native, she is a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, and was a member of the inaugural Academic All-League team a year ago. She is also a four-time member of the Dean’s List at Holy Cross, and is a member of the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Paul becomes the first Player of the Year to earn Academic All-League honors in the same season. The sophomore is a life science major and is in the pre-med program at Army with a 3.456 GPA.

Tuzhikova, a junior, majors in international relations at Bucknell with a 3.48 GPA. DeSimone, like Marr, was an Academic All-League selection a year ago and carries a 3.66 GPA majoring in biology at Holy Cross. Lafayette’s Blank, a sophomore with a 3.83 GPA, majors in psychology, while Sloand, another sophomore, studies industrial engineering with a 3.94 GPA at Lehigh.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
