Patriot League Tennis Release - 5.7.09
May 7, 2009 Center Valley, Pa. - The Patriot League champion Army women and NAvy men will both see first-round NCAA action on Friday. The Army women will head to Coral Gables, Fla., to take on No. 6 Miami at 1 p.m., while the Navy men face top-ranked Virginia at the same time of Friday. Male Tennis Player of the Month Jason Hill, Navy Sr., Marietta, Ga. Hill was a perfect 5-0 in April at both No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles for the Mids, as Navy won its third consecutive Patriot League crown. The senior was also 2-0 in both singles and doubles at the Patriot League Tournament, and won each of his five singles matches in straight sets. Hill was also selected as the 2009 Patriot League Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Female Tennis Player of the Month Paulina Gamboa, Bucknell Sr., Mexico City, Mexico Gamboa was 12-0 overall for the month of April at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles, as the Bison marched to their fifth-straight Patriot League Championship match. The senior went 6-0 in her singles and doubles matches through the end of the Patriot League Tournament, where Bucknell eventually fell, 4-1, to Army. First-Team selections for the women include Army's Annie Houghton and Niki Flach, Bucknell's Paulina Gamboa and Tania Varela, Colgate's Elise DeRose and Lehigh's Julie Arthofer. Second-Team selections include Army's Kristin Beehler, Michael Tollerton and Robie Verano, Bucknell's Dumitrita Iepuras and Lauren Lucido and Holy Cross' Kristen Meahl. Men's First-Team selections include Army's Phil Muhawi, Colgate's Martin MacIntyre, Lehigh's Troy List and Navy's Jason Hill, Nate Nelms and John Waters. Second-Team picks are Army's Jordan Girdley, Bucknell's Mark Malloy, Colgate's John Nogueras, Holy Cross' Matt Wierzel, Lafayette's Eric Wiley and Navy's Ramsey Lemaich. Navy's John Officer and Army's Paul Peck earned Coach of the Year honors. Team Notebooks Army The Black Knight men fell to Navy, 4-1, in the Patriot League Championship final, ending their season with an overall mark of 9-15 and 4-2 in League play. Freshman Donald Van Velzer earned Rookie of the Year honors. For the women, Army won its fifth-straight and tenth overall team title by beating Bucknell, 4-1, in the Patriot League final. Sophmore Annie Houghton was named Player of the Year for the second straight year. Army plays at No. 6 Miami on Friday at 1 p.m. in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Bucknell The Bison women fell, 4-1, to Army in the Patriot League Championship match, finishing the season with a 15-7 overall record. Freshman Dumitrita Iepuras was named Rookie of the Year, and Bucknell earned four All-League picks. The men ended the season at 8-11 overall and 3-1 in League play, with sophomore Mark Malloy named to the Second-Team All-Patriot League. Colgate The Colgate men ended the season at 12-8 overall and 4-1 in the League after losing 4-0 to Army in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. Senior Martin MacIntryre and junior John Nogueras earned All-League selections. For the women, junior Elise DeRose earned First-Team All-League recognition. The Raider women were 8-13 overall this season. Holy Cross Junior Kristen Meahl became only the second Crusader selected to a women's tennis All-League team after leading Holy Cross to a 7-7 overall record this spring. The men finished the season at 3-11 after falling to Colgate, 4-0, in the tournament quarterfinals. Lafayette Senior Sarah Sykes was named the Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Leopard women finished the season at 4-9, while the Lafayette men went 6-12. Junior Eric Wiley earned All-League honors. Lehigh Sophomore Troy List was named a First-Team All-League selection after leading Lehigh to a 6-12 overall record this spring. For the women, junior Julie Arthofer earned First-Team honors as well, as the Mountain Hawks ended their season at 6-11. Navy The Mids won their third straight Patriot League title by beating archrival Army, 4-1, in the Patriot League Championship. Senior Nate Nelms was named Player of the Year, while Coach John Peck earned Coach of the Year honors. Navy plays No. 1 Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 1 p.m. on Friday.
