CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Army Men's Tennis team added more hardware to go along with the Patriot League Tournament title, picking up two individual honors when the major awards were announced by the League office on Tuesday.
Black Knights head coach Jim Poling was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the fourth time and freshman Sam Lampman was named the Rookie of the Year. Bucknell sophomore Nick Bybel is the 2014 Patriot League Player of the Year.
Voting was conducted by the League's nine head coaches who could not cast a ballot for themselves or their own student-athletes.
Bybel, the 2013 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, set a Bucknell program record with 26 wins this season. The only Patriot League first singles player to go undefeated in league play, the Lancaster, Pa. native ended the season on an eight-match winning streak and won 12 of his last 13 matches. Bybel also finished with a 16-12 mark in doubles and ended the year on a four-match winning streak at No. 1 doubles.
The Black Knights are heading to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time under Poling, in his 12th season at West Point. The Black Knights secured the automatic bid with a 4-1 win over Navy in the tournament championship match. Army, who won 20 matches for only the fourth time in program history, will play defending NCAA champion Virginia in the opening round.
Lampman, the Patriot League Player of the Month for February, was named Rookie of the Year following a 15-5 campaign playing No. 1 or No. 2 singles. The Orlando, Fla. native teamed with freshman Grant Riechmann for doubles wins over Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy in the postseason tournament.
The first team All-League squad has a very familiar look, with five of the six members returning from a year ago. Led by Bybel and two-time Patriot League Player of the Year Asika Isoh of Army, the first team is represented by five different schools. Seniors Isoh and Luke Gensburg, of Colgate, are making their fourth appearance on the All-League team and juniors Ben Gilman, of Lehigh, and Navy's Calvin Mark were honored for the third straight year. Only Navy sophomore Austin Jones is a newcomer on the first team.
The second team features a trio of players from the champion Black Knights. Lampman, tournament MVP Alex Van Velzer and Riechmann are joined on the second unit by Navy junior Blake Daniel, Boston University senior Chanon Varapongsittikul and Lehigh senior Mark Goldberg. Like Isoh and Gensburg, Goldberg made the All-League team in each of his four seasons.
