2012 Patriot League Men’s Tennis Tournament Central
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The spring championship season continues with the 2012 Patriot League Men’s Tennis Tournament, which begins Friday at the United States Naval Academy Tennis Courts in Annapolis, Md.
Navy won all five of its matches against Patriot League opponents and earns the coveted top seed in the tournament. The Mids earn a quarterfinal bye and won’t see action until the first of two semifinal matches Saturday. Navy enters the tournament with a 16-8 overall record.
Lehigh, which hosted last year’s tournament, is the No. 2 seed. The Mountain Hawks boast an overall record of 11-7 and are 3-1 in League matches. Their only loss in League action came against the Mids, while they own a head-to-head victory over Army, which settles for the No. 3 seed. The Black Knights are 14-12 overall and 4-2 against League teams, with their losses coming against Lehigh and Navy. Army is the defending Patriot League champion.
Bucknell is 8-13 overall and owns a 2-3 record in League play to secure the No. 4 seed.
Colgate and Lafayette are tied at 1-4 in League play, but the Raiders clinch the fifth seed by virtue of a 5-2 head-to-head win over the Leopards April 1 in Easton, Pa.
The field is rounded out by Holy Cross, which is 1-5 overall this spring with an 0-2 mark against League teams. The Crusaders are the seventh seed.
Lafayette hosts Lehigh Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the final League match of the regular season. The result of the contest has no impact on the seeds. Both teams are locked into their positions regardless of that match’s outcome.
The tournament gets underway Friday at 9 a.m. with fourth-seeded Bucknell taking on No. 5 Colgate at 9 a.m. The second quarterfinal is set for 12 p.m., with No. 2 seed Lehigh taking on seventh-seeded Holy Cross. The day concludes with third seed Army going against No. 6 Lafayette at 3 p.m.
Saturday’s semifinals are slated to start at 10 a.m. with No. 1 Navy taking on the winner of Friday’s Bucknell-Colgate match. The second semifinal is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the winner of Lehigh-Holy Cross taking on the winner of Army-Lafayette.
The two semifinal victors will go head-to-head Sunday at 1 p.m. for the 2012 Patriot League Men’s Tennis Title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
The entire tournament is scheduled to take place at the USNA Tennis Courts on the campus of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. There will be no shuttle bus service available during the weekend, so attendees will have to park downtown and walk through the Academy gate.
In the event that inclement weather threatens, competition will be moved indoors to the Tose Family Tennis Center. Parking is available at that facility.
