Patriot League Tennis Release - 4.2.08

The 2008 tennis season is heading for the final set as teams prepare for the Patriot League Championships at the end of the month. Colgate junior Martin MacIntyre earned his second monthly award of the 2007-08 season, while Army freshman Michael Tollerton won the first monthly award of her career.

Male Tennis Player of the Month
Martin MacIntyre, Colgate Jr., Arlington, Va.

MacIntyre finished the month of March with a 6-1 record at the No. 1 singles position. Four of his six wins came in straight sets, and five of his wins came away from Hamilton, N.Y. MacIntyre earned two Patriot League victories over Lehigh and Navy, including a victory over the defending-Patriot League player of the year in the Navy match. The junior from Arlington, Va. also notched three doubles victories in the No. 1 position, including a League victory over Lehigh.

Female Tennis Player of the Month
Michael Tollerton, Army Fr., Sarasota, Fla.

Tollerton ended the month of March with an undefeated record of 5-0 for the Black Knights, who currently sit atop the Patriot League standings. Four of her victories came in straight sets, and she has now won seven-consecutive singles matches this spring. Although she did not compete in doubles during the month of March, she has an undefeated doubles record this spring as well.

Team Notebook

Army
The Army men and women have both posted winning records so far this spring, as the men currently sit at 9-5 and the women at 17-6. The men have been led by junior Phil Muhawi, who posted a record of 4-1 at the No. 1 singles position during the month of March. Freshman Michael Tollerton has paced the women's team with an undefeated singles record during the past month. The Black Knight men have yet to play a League match, while the women are currently 1-0 in Patriot League play.

Bucknell
The Bucknell men are currently 7-5 overall while the women have posted a record of 5-6 so far this season. Junior Ryan Sandburg tallied a record of 5-2 at Nos. 1 and 2 singles during March, and also teamed with Ira Reibeisen to win five doubles matches as well. Sophomore Tania Varela went 3-2 at No. 1 singles for the Bison women, as she moved into 21st on Bucknell's career victories list with 56.

Colgate
The Colgate men find themselves in second place in the Patriot League with a League record of 1-1, while the women are tied for the top spot with a 1-0 record in League play. Junior Martin MacIntyre led the Raiders with a 6-1 singles record last month, including League victories over Lehigh and Navy. Sophomore Elise DeRose led the women with three singles victories and five doubles victories over the course of the month of March.

Holy Cross
The Holy Cross men did not compete during the month of march, while the women dropped one non-League match at UMass. The Crusaders will play their first League match of the season on April 4 against Lehigh.

Lafayette
The Lafayette men find themselves with a record of 3-3 following the month of March, while the women have a record of 3-1. Both Lafayette teams recorded victories over Coppin State and Maryland-Eastern Shore to close out a month that was marked by several cancelled matches.

Lehigh
The Lehigh men currently have a record of 4-8 while the women are 6-8. The men dropped a tough League match to Colgate, while the women have suffered defeats in League play against Army and Colgate. The men have four-straight League matches on their upcoming schedule, while the women will play three straight.

Navy
The Mids are currently situated atop the Patriot League standings with an overall record of 15-7 and a perfect League record of 3-0. Senior Alex James finished the month of March with a singles record of 6-2 at the Nos. 4 and 5 positions, with both of his losses coming against nationally-ranked teams.
