POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Despite chilly temperatures and rain lingering, Army men’s traveled to regional foe Marist on Monday afternoon for its regular-season finale. The Black Knights fell to the Red Foxes, 5-2, in their final contest before this weekend’s Patriot League Championship.
Army (14-12) took two-of-three doubles contests from Marist (13-5) to capture the first point of the match. Sophomores Asika Isoh and Henry Jang-Milsten won their 19th match of the season with an 8-6 defeat of Matteo Giudici and Matt Himmelsbach at No. 1. Teaming for just the second time this spring, juniors Alex Holland and Rashad Shelton helped clinch the doubles point by knocking of Billy Bishop and Dalen Klessen, 8-4, at No. 3. The Army duo is 2-0 in dual matches and 5-1 overall.
Freshman Alex Van Velzer was the lone Black Knight to collect a singles victory. Van Velzer defeated Joris Van Eck, 7-5, 7-6, at No. 2 to give Army its second point of the match. The victory was the 14th of the spring for the Army plebe to put him in a tie for first place on the team with Isoh, while his 18 total wins list second on the squad.
Despite the loss, Army maintained its series lead against Marist at 13-4. The Red Foxes have won four of the last five meetings, including the two most recent season finales.
Army will await the official announcement for this weekend’s Patriot League Tournament. The Black Knights stand in third place with a 4-2 mark in conference play, and eye a matchup with Lafayette which stands in sixth place with a 1-4 record. Army defeated the Leopards 7-0 in the regular season. The Patriot League Championship will run Friday through Sunday at Navy in Annapolis, Md.
