July 10, 2006 WASHINGTON - Led by Shannon Westfall's perfect 4.0 grade point average and Patriot League Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athletes of the Year Valery Fomenko and Meghan Thiel, the American University swimming and diving teams placed 19 athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Westfall was one of 10 female student-athletes to attain a perfect grade point average and one of eight Eagle women's swimmer and diver to be named to the honor roll. Joining her is fellow junior Michielle Risinger (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), sophomores Erin Devlin (West Trenton, N.J./Ewing) Melinda Gilbert, Ashlee McEntee (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster High School) and Thiel. Freshmen Paige Mellars (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) and Jessica Reinhardt (Riverside, RI./St. Mary Academy) also attained over the 3.2 grade point average required to make the team. The women's team combined for a 3.32 semester grade point average, which also earned Team Academic All American honors earlier this spring. The men's side had 11 athletes named to the squad, led by Matt Bank (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek HS) and Zachary Smith's above 3.80 grade point averages. Senior Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year Fomenko and Kevin Falkenstein represented the graduates and Stephen Brennan was the only other upperclassmen to be named to the roll. Other than Bank and Smith, the sophomores had six named to the squad. Joe Coronato (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan), Dan Goodrich (West Islip, NY/West Islip HS), Chris Leggett (Wellesley, Ma./Wellesley HS), Dan Nagelberg (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill), Taylor Smith (South Portland, Me./South Portland) and Erik Taubeneck (Edmonds, Wash./Kamiak High School) also maintained GPAs above the required 3.20 to make the squad. The men's team's cumulative 3.48 GPA put them in fifth among all teams in the NCAA, earning Team Academic All American honors for the 21st straight semester.
