LEWISBURG, Pa. - Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek), members of the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team, competed at the Charlotte UltraSwim this past weekend at the Mecklenberg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C. The four-day meet featured many of the best swimmers in the country and Nicholson nearly made headlines as he came close to posting a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 400-meter individual medley.
Nicholson, a junior in 2012-13, competed in four events over the weekend with the 400 IM being his most impressive showing. He finished 21st of 54 swimmers in the prelims to earn a spot in the "C" final. The two-time First Team All-Patriot League selection finished third in the "C" final, placing him 19th overall. His finals time of 4 minutes, 30.84 seconds was just .35 seconds shy of an Olympic Trials cut.
If Nicholson had reached the Olympic Trials Cut, he would have been the fourth Bucknell swimmer to earn a spot in the Olympic Trials, joining Matthew Segar (200 free), Erik Heinemann (200 fly) and Emily Norton (200 breast). The Olympic Trials will take place June 25-July 2 in Omaha, Neb.
Nicholson also swam the 200 IM and 200 butterfly, finishing 56 of 73 and 39th of 50, respectively. He was disqualified for an illegal stroke in the 200 breast.
Treat, the two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a three-time All-Patriot League selection, also swam in four events over the weekend as he competed in the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke races as well as the 200 IM.
The meet was contested in long course meters, versus the shorter yards the Bison student-athletes are accustomed to from the college regular season.
SwimMac Carolina has hosted the Charlotte UltraSwim since 1985. This year's event was the 28th annual competition.
