Lehigh's Gilbert Named Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Center Valley, Pa. - Lehigh senior Tom Gilbert was voted the Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year it was announced on Wednesday by Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich. Gilbert is the third Mountain Hawk in Patriot League history to take home this award. Gilbert, an accounting major with a 3.47 cumulative grade-point average, is a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. The senior from Robesonia, Pa., has already secured a job with PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Philadelphia. He is also a member of Lehigh's community outreach (C.O.A.C.H.) program. At the 2007 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championship, Gilbert placed second in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, came in fourth in the 400-yard IM and was a member of four relay teams that finished in the top-four. The First-Team All-Patriot League swimmer broke his own school record in both the 100- and 200-yeard backstroke events this year. Gilbert joins Jeff Cline (1996) and Jason Boire (2000) as Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year award winners that hailed from Lehigh. To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor. The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
