Patriot League Announces Academic Awards in Women's Swimming and Diving

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy sophomore Ellen Bradford was named Women's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was one of 10 student- athletes named to the Academic All-League team, it was announced Monday by the Patriot League.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-League team are nominated and voted on by the League's swimming and diving sports information directors who cannot cast a ballot for their own student-athletes.

Nine institutions are represented on the Women's Swimming and Diving Academic All-League team. A pair of Bucknell student-athletes, juniors Tara Boyle and Lauren Perry, made the squad for the second straight year as did Army junior Kristen Barta, American junior Melissa Parker and Colgate junior Sami Wary. Rounding out the squad are Boston University sophomore Stephanie Nasson, Lafayette senior Lauren Berry, Lehigh sophomore Courtney Patterson and Loyola senior Erin Shea.

Bradford was named to the All-Patriot League first team for the second consecutive year in 2014 after winning the 200 breaststroke (2:17.03) and placing second in the 100 breaststroke in the Patriot League Championships. She totaled nine victories in the breaststroke events during the regular season and was selected as the Patriot League Swimmer of the Week once.

Bradford carries a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average at the U.S. Naval Academy majoring in systems engineering. Named to the 2013 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, the Knoxville, Tenn. native has received academic honors from the USNA in each of her three completed semesters.

The rest of the list includes student-athletes who have not only excelled in the pool but also in the classroom. Boyle won the 1-meter diving title for the third straight year in the Patriot League Championships and finished second in the 3-meter diving en route to being named the Patriot League Women's Diver of the Meet. Boyle carries a 3.83 GPA in Accounting & Financial Management at Bucknell.



Perry, like Boyle a three-time member of the All-Patriot League first team for the Bison, finished third in the 200 freestyle at the Patriot League Championships and carries a 3.87 GPA in Accounting & Financial Management.

Barta earned points for the Army squad and boasts a 3.964 in Law & Legal Studies at the U.S. Military Academy. Parker placed in the top 10 of both diving events at the 2014 Patriot League Championships and carries a 3.88 GPA in Biology at American.

Wary, a psychology major with a 3.57 GPA, finished in the top eight for Colgate in both the 50 and 100 freestyle at last month's championships. Berry, the 2013-14 Lafayette captain, holds all-time top 10 finishes in five events at the school and was a member of the record-breaking 800 free relay team. The Maroon Club Scholar Athlete of the Year carries a 3.96 GPA in Psychology.

Competing in her first Patriot League Championship, Nasson was named Women's Swimmer of the Meet after setting new school, PL and meet record in winning the 1650 freestyle, setting a school record while winning the 500 freestyle and placing second in the 200 freestyle. Nasson maintains a 3.38 GPA in Health Science at BU.

Patterson was a Patriot League Champion in the 400 IM in a school-record 4:16.73 and also placed in the top eight in the 500 and 1650 freestyle. Patterson maintains a 3.38 GPA in Business. Shea, who reached the finals of the 100 and 200 butterfly at the Patriot League championships, carries a 3.562 GPA in Biology.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
