CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy junior Laura Gorinski was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Women’s Swimming and Diving and was one of 11 student-athletes to garner Academic All-League honors, it was announced Monday morning by the League office.

A native of Greensburg, Pa., Gorinski repeats as Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the first back-to-back honoree since Navy’s Kelly Zahalka garnered the award three years in a row from 2007-09. In addition, Gorinski is the first to be named Female Swimmer of the Meet and Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the same season since Zahalka in 2007.

Now in its second year, the Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The Men’s Swimming and Diving Academic All-Patriot League Team consists of 10 student-athletes. Voting for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Academic All-Patriot League Team is conducted by the League’s swimming and diving sports information directors, who cannot vote for their own student-athletes. This year’s team features 11 student-athletes because of a tie in the voting.

Gorinski collected 60 individual points at the Patriot League Championships held at Navy by winning the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes along with the 200 individual medley. She also contributed to four victorious medley efforts by the Mids as they captured the League crown for the first time since 2010. Her times in the 200 breast (2:10.67) and 200 IM (1:59.95) set Navy, Patriot League and League Championships records. Gorinski was a five-time Patriot League Female Swimmer of the Week in 2011-12, while garnering national swimmer of the week honors Dec. 13.

Gorinski owns a 3.64 cumulative GPA while majoring in physics at the Naval Academy. A member of the Academic All-League team a year ago, she also received second-team All-District honors from CoSIDA for at-large sports last season, and was named an Honorable Mention Scholar All-American in 2010 and 2011 by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America.
