CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior Chris House was named Patriot League Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row while Boston University sophomore Emily Tillo claimed the Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor in her first season in the League while both also also headlined the Academic All-Patriot League teams released on Friday.
House repeats as the Patriot League Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year and also returns to the Academic All-Patriot League squad. Bucknell's Schuyler Stitzer also makes the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the second year in a row, with Lehigh sophomore Harley Abrams, Loyola University Maryland sophomore Jimmy Dengler and Lafayette junior Robert Dyer also making the list.
Tillo was joined on the Women's Golf Academic All-Patriot League Team by junior teammate Kristyna Pavlickova, Navy sophomore Renata Bucher and Bucknell seniors Lauren Bernard and Bridget Wilcox, who made the list for the second year in a row.
The Academic All-Patriot League teams featured five student-athletes each to replicate the men and women's golf first-team All-Patriot League squad size.
While House did not duplicate last year's individual title at the Patriot League Championship, he posted another strong season overall with four top-30 showings. He played in nine of Navy's 10 events, with his best finish coming with a 16th-place effort at the Bulldog Florida Invitational. House finished with a 77.13 stroke average for the season.
House continued to have outstanding success in the classroom, as the senior carries a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average as an Electrical Engineering major at Navy. He is ranked 32nd in academic order of merit among 1,087 graduating students, and with his military rank of ninth in his class House stands 23rd among Navy seniors in overall order of merit. He is one of 20 seniors selected as a Bowman Scholar, and has also been named a Trident Scholar. He is a three-time selection to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and seven-time honoree on the Superintendent's List and Commandant's List at Navy.
House earns Navy's eighth Patriot League Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, all coming since 2003. He earns the sixth award for the Mids in the last eight years, and is the second repeat winner in that span as Chris Renninger claimed the honor in 2007 and 2008.
Tillo becomes Boston University's first Scholar-Athlete of the Year in any women's sport after an impressive debut in the Patriot League on the course to go with success in the classroom. Tillo made a splash early in the year when she was named Patriot League Female Golfer of the Month in September, and had five top-10 finishes in 10 events including a seventh-place showing at the Patriot League Championship on April 19-20. She carries a 3.98 cumulative GPA as a Business Administration and Management major in BU's School of Management.
The Men's Golf Academic All-Patriot League Team features three of the top 11 finishers at the Patriot League Championship, as Dengler came in a tie for third to help Loyola to the team title, Abrams finished in eighth and Stitzer came in a tie for 11th. Each of the student-athletes also excelled in the classroom. Stitzer has a 3.47 GPA as a History major at Bucknell, Dyer maintains a 3.92 mark while majoring in Economics at Lafayette, Abrams is at 3.40 as a Political Science major at Lehigh and Dengler holds a 3.408 mark as a Business Administration (Accounting) major at Loyola.
The five honorees on the Women's Academic All-Patriot League Team all excelled on the course as they placed in the top seven at the League Championship. Pavlickova was second, Bernard came in third and Wilcox was fourth to earn first-team honors, while Tillo and Bucher tied for seventh and made the second-team All-Patriot League squad.
Pavlickova joined her teammate Tillo on the Academic All-League Team by holding a 3.27 GPA as a Business Administration and Management major at BU, while Bucknell featured Bernard with a 3.66 GPA as a Management major and International Relations minor and Wilcox carrying a 3.69 mark while majoring in Management and minoring in Chinese. Bucher maintains a 3.87 GPA as an Ocean Engineering major at Navy.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
