CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Patriot League Women's Golf Championship will be held at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. on Saturday and Sunday, with host Lehigh looking to defend its title in the second annual event.
The Mountain Hawks won the inaugural crown by three strokes over host Bucknell last season, with Navy placing third and Holy Cross fourth. Boston University joins the quartet for a five-team field in 2014, with the Terriers and Mountain Hawks named co-favorites in the League's championship poll at the beginning of the month.
The 54-hole competition will begin with the first 36 on Saturday and conclude with the final 18 on Sunday. Each participating team is limited to six golfers with the top four scorers each round counting towards the team total. The final team score is determined by totaling all completed rounds. Individual scoring consists of the lowest aggregate score of all completed rounds.
If weather precludes a 54-hole tournament, a League champion will be declared by whatever number of 18-hole rounds are completed over a three-day period (minimum 18 holes). The Monday following the Championship will be used as a make-up date to either finish a round of 18 holes that has been started on Saturday or Sunday or to begin and finish a round of 18 holes if Saturday and Sunday were cancelled due to weather.
The individual champion will be named the Patriot League Women's Golfer of the Year, while the highest finishing freshman receives the sport's Rookie of the Year honor. Head coaches from all five schools will vote on the Patriot League Coach of the Year award.
There will also be a 10-member All-Patriot League Team based on finish at the championship. The top five finishers (including ties) make the first-team squad, and all remaining finishers up to 10th place (including ties) qualify for the second-team.
Patriot League women's golf teams appeared at the same tournament numerous times during the spring season. Boston University and Bucknell were in the same field at the Kiawah Island Classic, Pinehurst Challenge and Seton Hall Invitational, with the Terriers finishing ahead of the Bison each time. Lehigh placed in front of Navy at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate and Hoya Invitational. Three teams are coming off impressive recent performances as Lehigh won the Red Flash Invitational, Navy was second at its home tournament and Boston University came in second at the Brown Bear Invitational on Tuesday.
In October, Boston University was fourth, Lehigh came in sixth and Navy placed eighth at the Lehigh Invitational held at Saucon Valley Country Club.
Five of the seven All-Patriot League golfers from last year's League Championship return to the field, including Bucknell's Bridget Wilcox (2nd), Lauren Bernard (T3rd) and Kasha Scott (5th) and Lehigh's Crystal Lee (T6th) and Kelly Moylan (T6th). Boston University has made a splash in its first season as Adela Cejnarova, Kristyna Pavlickova and Emily Tillo each won Patriot League monthly awards, while Navy's Renata Bucher comes off an individual title at the Navy Spring Classic last weekend and Marisa Cameron is the top returnee for Holy Cross after a 15th-place showing at last year's League Championship.
