Patriot League Announces Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-League Team (5.9.19)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Bucknell junior outfielder Tyler Wincig received the Patriot League Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was one of 13 student-athletes selected to the Academic All-Patriot League squad when the League office announced baseball academic honors on Thursday.
 
Wincig, a two-time Academic All-Patriot League honoree, is the seventh Bucknell student-athlete to claim the baseball scholar-athlete of the year recognition and one of six League student-athletes to receive academic all-League multiple times.

*Wincig, a First-Team All-Patriot League selection, led the League with a .643 slugging percentage while finishing second in batting (.348), home runs (8) and on-base percentage (.500). He also batted .404 (21-for-52) in League play with seven home runs and 21 RBIs.
*The two-time Academic All-Patriot League selection carries a 3.95 cumulative GPA while majoring in accounting and financial management.
*Wincig, a team captain, also serves as a writing consultant on campus and is part of the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy.
 
Army West Point senior left-handed pitcher Cam Opp (economics, 3.578 GPA) earned his third academic all-League nod while teammate and Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Jacob Hurtubise (operations research, 3.678 GPA) is a second-time all-academic team selection. Lehigh senior catcher Jeff Shanfeldt (finance and accounting, 3.83 GPA) and senior left-handed pitcher Ethan Frohman (industrial and systems engineering, 3.94 GPA), along with Navy junior shortstop Michael Coritz (quantitative economics, 3.45 GPA) also garnered academic accolades for the second consecutive season.
 
Nine of the 13 Academic All-Patriot League selections were named to the one of the two All-Patriot League teams, announced by the League on Wednesday. Wincig, Hurtubise, Army West Point junior third baseman Anthony Giachin (mechanical engineering, 4.041 GPA), Holy Cross starting pitchers Declan Cronin (history, 3.79 GPA) and Liam Dvorak (physics, 3.62 GPA) and Lehigh senior outfielder Ryan Malloy (finance, 3.90 GPA) were all named to the first team.
 
The Patriot League Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Patriot League Team honors student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The awards are nominated and voted on by the Patriot League baseball sports information directors.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
