Patriot League Announces Baseball Players of the Week (4.30.19)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy senior right-handed pitcher Noah Song captured his 10th career Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, while Bucknell junior outfielder Tyler Wincig and Bison freshman second baseman Will Gannon received player and rookie of the week, respectively when Patriot League Baseball Weekly Awards announced honors on Tuesday.

Song picked up his sixth Patriot League Pitcher of the Week of the campaign after breaking his own Patriot League single-season strikeout record and becoming the first pitcher in League history to reach 400 career strikeouts. Song earned his ninth win of the season, in a 2-0 decision against Lehigh, by allowing four hits and striking out 15 in 7.0 shutout innings.

Wincig claimed his first Patriot League Player of the Week this season by batting .500 (9-for-18) while slugging .667 and reaching base at a .600 clip to help the Bison go 4-2 last week while splitting with Lafayette and sweeping Lehigh. He also drove in eight runs and scored six runs in six games last week.

Gannon was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the first time after driving in seven runs in four games and batting .462 (6-for-13) last week. He combined to go 3-for-7 with three RBIs in a Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Lehigh to conclude Bucknell’s season.

NAVY CLINCHES PATRIOT LEAGUE REGULAR-SEASON TITLE; HOLY CROSS ALSO CLINCHES TOURNAMENT BERTH
Navy clinched its fifth-straight Patriot League regular-season title on Sunday with a victory over Lafayette in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader with Holy Cross and Army West Point splitting their Sunday doubleheader. The Crusaders also earned a berth into the Patriot League Tournament by taking three-of-four games from Army West Point last weekend. Army West Point’s magic number to clinch a berth in the Patriot League Tournament is one, meaning one more League victory or one League loss by Lehigh puts the defending champion Black Knights in the field of four. Lafayette has a magic number of two to make the tournament, with them needing a combination of wins and Lehigh losses during the final weekend to equal two to clinch a spot in the tournament for the first time since 2015.

NOAH SONG BREAKS HIS OWN SINGLE-SEASON STRIKEOUT RECORD; REACHES 400 CAREER K’S
Song struck out 15 batters in a complete-game victory against Lehigh on Saturday, finishing one shy of his career high, but breaking his own Patriot League single-season record, set last season. The Claremont, Calif. native, who became the League’s career strikeout leader earlier this season, reached 400 career strikeouts in the victory against the Mountain Hawks.

LAFAYETTE CLAIMS LIBERTY BELL CLASSIC TITLE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT SEASON
Lafayette defeated Delaware, 7-5, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia to capture its second straight Liberty Bell Classic Championship. Sophomore second baseman Ethan Stern went 3-for-4 with two runs and an eighth-inning RBI single to put the Leopards in the lead. The Liberty Bell Classic, conceived in 1992, is a tournament comprised of eight local Division I programs, including Lafayette, Lehigh, Delaware, La Salle, Penn, St. Joseph’s, Temple and Villanova.

ARMY WEST POINT’S JACOB HURTUBISE CLOSING IN ON PATRIOT LEAGUE RECORD
Army West Point junior centerfielder Jacob Hurtubise stole his 92nd career base in the fifth inning of game two against Navy on Saturday, April 20. Hurtubise passed Fordham’s Shawn Harris, who stole 91 bases from 1992-94, to move into second-place in Patriot League history. The Black Knights’ centerfielder is seven shy of Bucknell’s Ian Joseph, who recorded 99 stolen bases between 1998 and 2001. He is fifth in NCAA DI with 0.80 stolen bases per game. Army West Point has 12 regular-season games left this season.
