Patriot League Baseball Players of the Week Announced (3.12.19)


CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy each claimed one of the three Patriot League Baseball Weekly Awards when the League office announced weekly honors on Tuesday.
 
Navy senior right-handed pitcher Noah Song captured his third Patriot League Baseball Pitcher of the Week this season and the 12th League weekly honor of his career after striking out 16 batters in a win against Cornell.
 
Lehigh senior outfielder Ryan Malloy picked up his second Patriot League Player of the Week honor of the campaign by hitting .538 (7-for-13) with two home runs and nine RBIs during the Mountain Hawks’ series against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Lafayette freshman shortstop Justin Johnson batted .462 (6-for-13) with three runs and three doubles during Lafayette’s three-game series against VCU to claim his first Patriot League Baseball Rookie of the Week honor.
 
Bucknell freshman outfielder Chris Cannizzaro, Lehigh junior RHP Levi Stoudt and Navy senior outfielder Liam Lowery were selected as weekly honorable mentions.

PATRIOT LEAGUE STUDENT-ATHLETES AMONG NCAA DI LEADERS
*Navy senior RHP Noah Song leads NCAA DI in strikeouts (52), strikeouts per nine innings (18.23) and is among the nation’s leaders in ERA (12th, 0.35).
*Bucknell junior outfielder JohnPaul Bell (16th, .459) and Lehigh senior outfielder Ryan Malloy (23rd, .455) are among the nation’s leaders in batting average.
*Malloy (3rd, 1.75), Army West Point sophomore first baseman Anthony Giachin and Bell (26th, 1.40) all are in the top-30 NCAA DI players in RBIs per game.
*Army West Point junior outfielder Jacob Hurtubise is 20th in the nation averaging 0.75 stolen bases per game and 25th in runs per game with 1.33.

PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ryan Malloy, Lehigh, Sr., OF, Holland, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep
*Malloy batted .538 (7-for-13) with two home runs, nine RBIs, four runs and two doubles during a 2-1 weekend for Lehigh with wins over UMES and Monmouth.
*The senior outfielder earned his second player of the week honor this season with a 1.154 slugging percentage and .538 on-base percentage.
*Malloy went 4-for-5 with six RBIs and two runs with two doubles against UMES and has hit in his last seven games.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Noah Song, Navy, Sr., RHP, Claremont, Calif./Claremont
*Song earned a 2-1 victory against Cornell by allowing one run on three hits over 7.0 innings while tying his career-high with 16 strikeouts.
*The senior right-hander held the Big Red to a .130 batting average and struck out at least two batters in each inning pitched.
*Song leads NCAA DI with 52 strikeouts in 25.2 innings and improved to 2-0 with a 0.35 ERA in four starts.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Justin Johnson, Lafayette, Fr., SS, Glen Gardner, N.J./North Hunterdon
*Johnson batted .462 (6-for-13) with three runs and three doubles during Lafayette’s three-game series against VCU.
*The rookie shortstop slugged .692 and reached base at a .500 clip during the series while also stealing two bases.
*Johnson turned in a pair of multi-hit games against the Rams and has now hit in his last five games. He leads the Leopards with a .375 batting average.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Liam Lowery, Navy, Sr., OF, Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown
*Lowery batted .400 (8-for-20) with a .750 slugging percentage while reaching base at a .455 clip. The senior outfielder hit in each of his five games while scoring three runs and driving in six to help the Mids go 4-1.
 
Levi Stoudt, Lehigh, Jr., RHP, Pennsburg, Pa./Perkiomen School
*Stoudt threw 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, and striking out 10 in Lehigh’s 13-1 victory against Maryland Eastern Shore.  
 
Chris Cannizzaro, Bucknell, Fr., OF, Staten Island, N.Y./Poly Prep
*Cannizzaro batted .500 (5-for-10) with one run and two RBIs during Bucknell’s three-game series with Toledo. He had a pair of multi-hit games in the series.
