CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — The Patriot League announced its 2019 All-League teams in men's and women's swimming and diving Thursday. Navy men and women were well represented with 35 student-athletes being named to the teams, following their eighth-straight sweep at the Patriot League Championships last weekend at Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, Pa.
A total of 72 student-athletes earned All-League laurels – 36 on both the men’s and women’s sides. The men’s and women’s first teams are each made up of 18 swimmers and divers as are the second teams. The men’s first team is comprised of 19 student-athletes due to a tie in individual points scored at the meet and the men’s second team has 17 student-athletes as a result.
Of the 35 Mids on the All-League teams, 19 are men (13 first-team, six second-team) and 16 are women (nine first-team, seven second-team). Army West Point checks in second with a total of 16 student-athletes earning honors, with 10 on the men’s side (six first-team, four second-team) and six on the women’s (one first-team, five second-team). Bucknell saw seven student-athletes earn All-League laurels, as three men earned second-team recognition and seven women (three first-team, one second-team) were honored. Boston U. placed six student-athletes on the combined teams (two men on second-team, three women on first-team and one woman on second-team). Rounding out the All-League teams are Lehigh and Loyola Maryland. Both schools placed four student-athletes on the combined teams; one male swimmer on second-team, one female swimmer on first-team and two women on second-team.
A total of 14 swimmers and divers received first-team honors for a second consecutive year. Navy’s Lauren Barber is the only student-athlete this year to earn an All-League first team selection during each of her four years. Army West Point’s Tom Ottman, along with Navy’s Brayden Lauffer and Zach Piedt also received All-League recognition all four years, as was recognized on second-team at least once. Navy’s Bradley Buchter, Vince Everman and Delaney Walz, along with Boston University’s Erin Nabney, all collected their third career first-team All-League honor this season.
Swimmers and divers who place first in individual events at the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships automatically qualify for the All-League first team, while runner-up finishers are guaranteed at least a second-team spot. Both teams are completed based upon overall points compiled during the championship. For example, a second-place finisher can move up to the first team if they accumulated enough points during the meet and the first-place finishers do not fill the 18 spots on first team. Only individual points count toward all-League accolades.
