Patriot League Announces Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-League (2.25.19)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy senior Stefano Pineda and Army West Point junior Lynne Mooradian were named the Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively, in addition to each being named to the 10-member men’s and women’s indoor track and field academic all-League teams when they were announced by the League office on Monday morning.
 
Voting for the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Men’s and Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Patriot League teams are conducted by the League’s men’s and women’s indoor track & field sports information directors.
 
Pineda and Mooradian each earn their second scholar-athlete of the year honor, after both being selected 2018 outdoor track and field scholar-athlete of the year.
  
2019 Patriot League Men’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Stefano Pineda, Navy, Sr., Hockessin, Del./The Charter School of Wilmington
*Pineda earned his second men’s track and field scholar-athlete of the year award after garnering 2018 outdoor track and field scholar-athlete of the year honors. He’s a four-time academic all-League selection.
*Pineda earned a silver medal at the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships by placing second in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 5.20-meters (17’00.25”).
*The senior mechanical engineering major carries a 4.0 GPA, along with being a seven-time honoree to the Commandant’s List and five-time honoree to the Superintendent’s List by the U.S. Naval Academy.
 
2019 Patriot League Women’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Lynne Mooradian, Army West Point, Jr., Hanover, Pa./South Western
*Mooradian earns her second women’s track and field scholar-athlete of the year honor after being the 2018 outdoor track and field honoree. She is also a three-time academic all-League selection.
*Mooradian earned gold and bronze medals at the 2019 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships as a member of the winning distance medley relay team, along with a third-place finish in the women’s pentathlon, totaling 3,430 overall points.
*The junior mechanical engineering major carries a 4.210 grade point average (GPA) along with earning Distinguished Cadet Award by the U.S. Military Academy.
 
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
 
In addition to Pineda, the Mids’ senior Benjamin Stewart (ocean engineering, 3.75) also made the squad for the second time, along with three more multi-year honorees, including American senior Matthew Rainey (communications, law, economics, government, 3.57), Army West Point junior Benjamin Petrella (physics, 4.006) and Boston University senior Johnny Kemps (business administration & management, 3.65). First-time selections include, Army West Point junior Jackson Sullivan (nuclear engineering, 3.666); Lafayette sophomore Samuel Fishbein (international affairs, 3.64); two Lehigh honorees in senior Kyle Berman (computer science and business, 3.60) and junior Kyle Sult (mechanical engineering, 3.86); and Navy junior Jake Brophy (computer science, 3.73).
 
Army West Point’s Mooradian is joined by senior teammate Cassie Mundekis (English, 3.818), who made the team in 2017, along with Bucknell senior Colleen Buckley (animal behavior, 3.65) and Lehigh senior Clare Severe (bioengineering, 3.39), who are repeat members of the women’s Academic All-Patriot League team. Army West Point junior Haley Watson (political science 3.645); Boston University junior Abigail Gugel (biology, 3.61); Colgate senior Marina Reilly (mathematical economics, 3.73); Lehigh junior Mary Casey (biology, 3.83); Loyola Maryland sophomore Senna Ohlsson (biology & English, 3.706); and Navy sophomore Sam Orie (chemistry, 3.94) all make their first appearances on the academic all-League team.
  
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
