Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Players of the Week Announced (3.5.18)

Loyola Maryland sweeps weekly awards

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – No. 18/16 Loyola Maryland swept the Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Awards after a 16-15 overtime victory over then No. 13 Penn State on Saturday afternoon, as freshman Livy Rosenzweig was named the Attacker and Rookie of the Week, junior Taylor VanThof was named the Midfielder of the Week and junior Kristen Yanchoris was named the Defensive Player of the Week, when awards were announced by the League office on Monday.
 
No. 8/11 Navy senior midfielder Jenna Collins earned a spot on the weekly honorable mention list, along with Lehigh junior attacker Courtney Henig, Lafayette freshman defender Quinn Lacy and American sophomore attacker Erica Skowron.
 
NAVY AND LOYOLA MARYLAND IN THE POLLS
Navy fell to No. 2 Boston College on Tuesday, before defeating Winthrop over the weekend to remain at No. 8 in this week’s Inside Lacrosse Poll. The Mids also remain at No. 11 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll.  Loyola Maryland moved up, thanks to an overtime win over the Nittany Lions. The Greyhounds climb from receiving votes to No. 18 in the Inside Lacrosse Poll, while moving from No. 23 to No. 16 in the IWLCA Coaches’ Poll.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE VS. RANKED OPPONENTS
The Greyhounds defeated then No. 13 Penn State, 16-15, in overtime for their first win against a ranked opponent this season. The Mids fell to No. 2 Boston College, 20-14, while Lehigh lost to then No. 14 Princeton, 18-12, last Tuesday. Boston University fell to No. 21 Duke, 21-13 on Sunday.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUERS AMONG NCAA DI LEADERS
*Boston University sophomore attacker Kailey Conry leads NCAA DI, averaging 3.67 assists per game and fourth with 6.0 points per game. Lehigh junior attacker Courtney Henig is fifth at 3.0 assists per game and 12th with 5.4 points per game.
*Henig is second in the nation with 15 assists, while Navy’s Kelly Larkin, Army West Point’s Maddie Miller and American’s Erica Skowron are 11th with 12.
*Lehigh graduate student defender Julianne D’Orazio is tied for 20th in the nation with 2.25 caused turnovers per game with Bucknell senior defender Katherine Doyle.
*Navy senior midfielder Jenna Collins and Lafayette junior attacker Jane Kirby are tied for 14th in the nation with 4.0 goals per game and 20 goals.
*Loyola Maryland junior goalkeeper Kady Glynn is 12th in the nation, averaging 11.33 saves per game, while Colgate goalkeeper Samantha Croston is 19th with a .500 save percentage.
 
UPCOMING GAMES
Patriot League programs will be in action from Tuesday through Sunday with 16 games during that span. American hosts Old Dominion and Lehigh welcomes VCU to open the week at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, with both being streamed live on the Patriot League Network (PLN). On Wednesday Holy Cross welcomes Vermont (1 p.m.) and Loyola Maryland will take on Towson (7 p.m.) in a pair of games streamed on the PLN, while Boston University travels to Johns Hopkins in a game that will be streamed on the Bluejays website (CLICK HERE). Army West Point hosts Wofford (4 p.m.) on Thursday afternoon, while the Eagles bring Gardner-Webb to town on Friday, both on the PLN. Two more games will be on the PLN on Saturday, including Princeton at Loyola Maryland (noon) and St. Bonaventure at Lafayette (1 p.m.). PATRIOT LEAGUE WOMEN’S LACROSSE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
ATTACKER AND ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Livy Rosenzweig, Loyola Maryland, Attack, Fr., Katonah, N.Y./Somers
Rosenzweig posted her first collegiate hat trick, while dishing out two assists and tying for a game-high seven draw controls, as Loyola Maryland came back to defeat No. 13 Penn State, 16-15, in overtime. The freshman attacker assisted Frankie Kamely’s game-tying goal with 28 seconds in regulation, sending the game to overtime. Rosenzweig got the draw control to open the extra period, giving Loyola possession to set up the game-winning goal. Rosenzweig earns her first Attacker of the Week and her second-consecutive Rookie of the Week.
 
MIDFIELDER OF THE WEEK
Taylor VanThof, Loyola Maryland, Jr., M, Livonia, N.Y./Livonia
VanThof scored a career-high four goals and tied game-highs with seven draw controls and two ground balls to help Loyola Maryland erase a seven-goal deficit in a 16-15 overtime win over No. 13 Penn State on Saturday. The junior midfielder scored three of our four goals during midway through the second half during a 6-0 Greyhounds’ run. Four of her draw controls came during a second half where Loyola Maryland was able to out-draw Penn State, 9-7.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kristen Yanchoris, Loyola Maryland, Jr., D, Sykesville, Md./Century
Yanchoris caused a game-high three turnovers and tied the game-high with two ground balls to help Loyola Maryland comeback to defeat No. 13 Penn State, 16-15, in overtime on Saturday. The junior defender caused a Nittany Lions’ turnover with 46 seconds remaining in regulation, while they were man down, to allow the Greyhounds to tie the score and send the game to overtime.
 
HONORABLE MENTION
Jenna Collins, Navy, Midfielder, Sr., Clarksville, Md./River Hill
Collins finished the week with 11 points on nine goals and two assists with 14 draw controls during a 1-1 week. The senior midfielder finished with five goals, one assist and five draw controls in a loss to No. 2 Boston College on Tuesday. She tallied four goals, one assist, nine draw controls and two ground balls in a win over Winthrop on Saturday.
 
Quinn Lacy, Lafayette, Defender, Fr., Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore
Lacy helped the Leopards to a 2-0 week, by causing two turnovers and picking up 11 ground balls during the week, while helping hold both opponents under 10 goals. Against Manhattan, Lacy picked up a League single-game high nine ground balls, while causing two turnovers. The freshman defender picked up two ground balls in a win against East Carolina on Sunday.
 
Courtney Henig, Lehigh, Attacker, Jr., Millstone, N.J./Notre Dame
Henig totaled 12 points on seven goals and five assists, while picking up three ground balls during a 0-2 week for Lehigh. The junior attacker had a hand in 12 of the Mountain Hawks’ 23 goals during the week, including two goals and four assists against No. 14 Princeton
 
Erica Skowron, American, Attacker, So., Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons
Skowron finished 14 points over two games on six goals and eight assists, to go along with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. She finished with 11 points on five goals and six assists in a win over Howard on Wednesday. Skowron also had one goal and two assists in a loss to UMBC on Saturday.
