FULL MEN’S RESULTS
BOSTON, Mass. – The Navy men earned their fifth-consecutive indoor track & field championship, while the Bucknell women clinched the title by setting a Patriot League record in the distance medley relay (DMR) during the final day of competition at the 2017 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships at Boston University’s Track and Tennis Complex.
The Mids tallied 187 points to outscore second-place Army West Point (168.66) and third-place Boston University (132) for their fifth-straight indoor title. Bucknell (130), Lehigh (76), American (39), Lafayette (26), Colgate (13) and Holy Cross (8.33). Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey was named the Men’s Head Coach of the Year.
The Bison women, who finished second last season, posted several record-setting performances during the final day to register 180 points for the team title, while Head Coach Kevin Donner was named the Coach of the Year. Boston University finished second with 163.33 points, while Navy took third-place with 112.33 points. Lehigh (110.33), Army West Point (109), Holy Cross (48), Lafayette (24), Loyola Maryland (14), American (12) and Colgate (7) rounded out the field.

During Sunday’s field action Army junior Lee Bares won the pole vault clearing 5.00 meters. Lehigh senior Lucas Warning broke the Patriot League record in the shot put with a heave of 18.07 meters, finishing in front of Navy senior Griffie Loy, the previous record-holder, who had a throw of 17.49 meters. Boston University senior David Oluwadara broke his own Patriot League record in the triple jump with a leap of 15.79 meters.
On the women’s side Navy sophomore Rosemary Brinegar won the pole vault, clearing 3.75 meters, with teammate Kaitlyn Stafford finishing second in 3.75 meters. Army West Point junior Briyah Brown earned gold in the shot put with a distance of 15.15 meters. In the triple jump the Terriers’ sophomore Lovie Burleson finished a centimeter short of the Patriot League record, winning with a jump of 12.56 meters.
Navy earned gold medals behind the performance of sophomore Kordell Williams, won gold in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8:09. Senior captain Nathan Gainey won the 500-meter dash in a Patriot League record time of 1:02.49 Gainey also served as the anchor for the Mids gold-medal winning 4x400-meter relay team that finished in 3:15.33.
Army West Point senior and Male Track Athlete of the Meet Trevor Touchton won the one-mile run with a time of 4:06.76. Sophomore Ben Sims won the 60-meter dash in 6.80 and teammate senior Jose Santana won the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.83.
American junior Liam Purdy pulled off a highlight-worthy victory in the 800-meter run crossing the finish line in 1:53.25, despite missing one shoe. Touchton finished second in 1:53.34.
Boston University senior Matti Groll won the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:25.45 and was the anchor for BU’s gold-medal winning DMR squad that finished in 9:59.98. Teammate senior Cameron Williams won the 200-meter run, breaking the Patriot League record by one-hundredth of a second with a time of 20.57. Terriers’ freshman Paul Luevano put on a show in the 3,000-meter run, racing away from the pack to finish in 8:13.12.
On the women’s side Bucknell junior Christine Bendzinski finished in front of Army West Point sophomore Abby Halbrook to win the one-mile run with a time of 4:57.05. Later in the day, Bendzinski edged out Lehigh sophomore Maura Henderson in the 3,000-meter run, in what proved to be one of the meet’s closest finishes. Bendzinski smashed the Patriot League record by more than 10 seconds, finishing in 9:27.37, with Henderson finishing second in 9:27.43. The Bison women kept rolling, as freshman Kaitlin Salisbury won the 60-meter dash in 7.67.
Bison senior Sarah Chandler fell short of her Patriot League record, but still earned gold in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:53.15. Chandler also anchored the Bucknell women’s DMR that - along with Kathleen Fitzgerald, Emily Ryan and Margaret Sliney – won by beating the previous League record by more than 10 seconds, to finish in 11:42.17. The win in the DMR clinched the team title for the Bison.
Boston University senior Toria Levy broke three League records and earned four gold medals to be named the Female Athlete of the Meet. Earlier in the day, Levy won the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in a record time of 8.53. She would come back and break the League record in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:11.94. Levy earned gold in the 200-meter run, finishing three-tenths of a second off the League record in 24.41. She was also part of the Boston U. record-setting 4x400-meter relay team – along with Ayodele Adesany, Leah Fowlkes and Djenne Parris - that earned gold with a record time of 3:39.66
Army sophomore Cassie Mundekis won the 800-meter run in a League-record 2:08.89. Lafayette senior Drew Davis earned gold in the 400-meter dash, winning in a time of 55.55.
Six Patriot League records were broken on the women’s side, while three men’s records were broken on the final day of competition at Boston University.
