Patriot League Announces M-F Athletic Indoor Track and Field Weekly Awards (1.17.17)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Nine of the Patriot League indoor track & field programs were in action with Army West Point at the Virginia Tech Invitational, American and Navy at the Navy Winter Invitational, Bucknell at the Nittany Lion Challenge, Colgate and Holy Cross at the Towson Tiger Invitational, Lafayette at the Great Dane Classic and Lehigh at the Angry Bird Challenge.
 
On the women’s side, Lehigh’s Maura Henderson earns her second-consecutive M-F Athletic Patriot League Female Track Athlete of the Week, while Army West Point’s Briyah Brown earns back-to-back female field athlete of the week honors.
 
Lehigh senior thrower Lucas Warning earns his second male field athlete of the week, after earning the honor for the week ending on December 3.
 
Navy’s Dan Kelly earns his first male track athlete of the week, while Bucknell’s Drew Dorflinger and Army West Point’s Bethany Nunnery earn their first male and female rookie of the week, respectively.
 
All 10 Patriot League programs will be in action this week, as American and Navy will compete at the Navy Mid-Week Meet on Thursday to kickoff the action. Army West Point will compete in the Joe Donahue Games on Friday. AU and Loyola Maryland will compete in the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday, Navy hosts the Navy Open, Bucknell will compete at the Gulden Invitational, Boston University hosts a Multi-Team Meet at their Track & Tennis Center and Colgate will compete in the Upstate Challenge. Holy Cross will compete against New Hampshire and Lafayette and Lehigh will meet in Bethlehem.

M-F ATHLETIC PATRIOT LEAGUE MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Dan Kelly, Navy, So., Sprints, Warwick, N.Y.
Kelly recorded a personal-best and IC4A qualifying time of 1:03.68 in the 500-meter run at the Navy Winter Invitational. Kelly improved his previous best time by 1.87 seconds to give him the fastest time in the 500m among Patriot League runners.


M-F ATHLETIC PATRIOT LEAGUE FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Maura Henderson, Lehigh, So., Distance, Narbeth, Pa.
Henderson won the 3,000-meter run at the Angry Birds Challenge in Bethlehem, Pa. with an adjusted time of 9:42.93. The time is a new personal record for Henderson, the fastest time by a Patriot League runner this season and the 24th fastest time in NCAA Division I.  

M-F ATHLETIC PATRIOT LEAGUE MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Lucas Warning, Lehigh, Sr., Shot Put, Mertztown, Pa.
Warning finished second of 18 and was the highest-placing collegiate athlete at the Angry Birds Invitational with a shot put of 18.09 meters, breaking his own program record for the second time this season. His distance is the best in the Patriot League and 16th best in the nation this season. Warning now holds the five furthest indoor shot puts in Lehigh program history and the four furthest in the Patriot League this season.
 
M-F ATHLETIC PATRIOT LEAGUE FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Briyah Brown, Army West Point, Jr., Thrower, New Rochelle, N.Y.
Brown placed third in the shot put at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a toss of 14.52 meters. Her shot put distance is behind only her own for the top mark in the Patriot League this season. She also finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 17.30 meters, the second-best mark in the Patriot League this season.
 
M-F ATHLETIC PATRIOT LEAGUE MALE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Drew Dorflinger, Bucknell, Fr., Distance, Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville
Dorflinger finished third in the 3,000-meter run at the Nittany Lion challenge with a time of 8:27.42. His time is tied for the fifth-fastest in the Patriot League this season.
 
M-F ATHLETIC PATRIOT LEAGUE FEMALE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Bethany Nunnery, Army West Point, Fr., Distance, North Kingstown, R.I.
Nunnery captured gold in the 5,000-meter run at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a time of 17:45.93. Her time is the second-best in the Patriot League and 35th-fastest in the nation this season.
 
HONORABLE MENTION
Jose Santana, Army West Point, Sr., Sprints, Orlando, Fla.
Santana captured gold in the 400-meter run with an IC4A-qualifying time of 49.07 in a strong field. His time is the best among Patriot League runners in the 400m this season.
 
Tyler Russell, Navy, Jr., Jumper, Fort Collins, Colo.
Russell cleared the seven-foot mark in the high jump for the third time in his career. He had a first place finish and an IC4A-qualifying mark with a 7 foot-0.25 inch (2.14m) jump to tie Army’s Jeff Giannettino for the best mark in the Patriot League and 17th-best in the nation.  
 
Jeff Giannettino, Army West Point, So., Jumper, West Burlington, Iowa
Giannettino placed first in the high jump, clearing the seven-foot mark (7 feet 0.25 inches) at 2.14 meters, just one centimeter shy of the program record. Giannettino and Navy’s Russell are tied with the best mark in the Patriot League and 17th-best mark in the nation.
 
Abby Halbrook, Army West Point, So., Mid-Distance, Tyler, Texas
Halbrook finished third in the mile at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a time of 4:55.68, just 5.3 seconds off the program record. Her time is the fastest in the Patriot League this season.
 
Marina Reilly, Colgate, So., Jumper, Oradell, N.J.
Reilly set a personal record in the long jump at 5.47 meters to finish seventh of 34 competitors and finished ninth of 27 with a triple jump distance of 11.15 meters at the Towson Tiger Invitational. Her long jump height and triple jump distance were both tied for fourth-best in the Patriot League this year.
 
Courtney Avery, Lehigh, Sr., High Jump, Wynantskill, N.Y.
Avery cleared the bar at 1.7 meters to finish first of 15 competitors at the Angry Birds Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. She has now won the high jump in four consecutive meets to start the season and holds the four best high jump marks in the Patriot League this season.
