Patriot League Football Corvias Players of the Week Announced (11.21.16)

Edmonds, Anderson, Pretlow and Matthews earn weekly honors

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Fordham junior running back Chase Edmonds was named the Patriot League Corvias Offensive Player of the Week for the seventh time during his career after rushing for 181 rushing yards on 29 carries and three touchdowns in a win over Bucknell. Edmonds, who broke the Patriot League career record for rushing touchdowns last week, increased his total to 62 after Saturday’s performance. Bucknell’s junior defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson earned his first Corvias Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season after registering career-highs with 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks against Fordham.
 
Fordham’s senior defensive back/kick returner Jihaad Pretlow earned his first Corvias Special Teams Player of the Week honor this season after totaling 112 kickoff return yards on three returns for a 37.3 yard/return average. Colgate freshman running back Alex Matthews also earned his first weekly honor, as the Corvias Special Teams Player of the Week. Matthews rushed for a career-high 96 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown for the Raiders in a win over Georgetown.
 
Lehigh’s senior quarterback Nick Shafnisky earns a spot on the honor roll after earning MVP honors in The Rivalry game against Lafayette on Saturday. Shafnisky tossed three touchdown passes and ran for another in the win. Georgetown’s senior defensive lineman Hunter Kiselick also received honorable mention with 15 tackles and his FCS-leading fourth blocked kick of the season. Fordham junior linebacker Niko Thorpe and Colgate junior defensive lineman Pat Afriyie also earned honorable mention for their performances on Saturday.
 
 
Corvias Offensive Player of the Week
Chase Edmonds, Fordham, Jr., RB, Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East
Edmonds capped his junior season with 181 rushing yards on 29 carries and three touchdowns in Fordham’s 36-22 victory over Bucknell. He rushed for touchdowns of four, one and two yards to give him 62 career rushing touchdowns. His 181 rushing yards gives Edmonds 1,799 rushing yards on the season, the top mark in the FCS and just 39 yards shy of Fordham’s single-season record of 1,838, set by Edmonds in 2014. He also added one catch for 19 yards in the win.
 
Corvias Defensive Player of the Week
Abdullah Anderson, Bucknell, Jr., DL, Galloway, N.J./Absegami
Anderson earns his first Corvias Defensive Player of the Week honor this season after finishing with five tackles, a career-high 3.5 tackles for loss for 18 yards in addition to a career-high 2.5 sacks in a loss to Fordham. Anderson also blocked two field goals (27 and 45 yards) and broke up a pass, proving to be a disruptive force throughout the day. Anderson finished the season with 55 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks, all career-highs.
 
Corvias Special Teams Player of the Week
Jihaad Pretlow, Fordham, Sr., KR/DB, Elizabeth, N.J./Blair Academy
Pretlow returned three kickoffs for 112 yards for an average of 37.3 yards per return in Fordham’s 36-22 victory over Bucknell on Saturday. His game-opening 56 yards kickoff return to the Bison 39 yard line helped set up the Rams first score of the day.
 
Corvias Rookie Player of the Week
Alex Matthews, Colgate, Fr., RB, Mentor, Ohio/Mentor
Matthews rushed for a career-high 96 yards on 16 carries and scored a 21-yard touchdown to help Colgate defeat Georgetown, 38-10. Matthews averaged 6.0 yards per rush in the Raiders victory.
 
WEEKLY HONORABLE MENTION
Nick Shafnisky, Lehigh, Sr., QB, Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall
Shafnisky completed 19-of-29 pass attempts for 268 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for additional score in Lehigh’s 45-21 victory over Lafayette in The Rivalry. Shafnisky was named the game’s Most Valuable Player for the second time in his career. He is only the ninth two-time MVP in the game’s history.
 
Hunter Kiselick, Georgetown, Sr., DL, Nutley, N.J./Bergen Catholic
In his final collegiate game Kiselick recorded a career-high with 15 tackles, also a season-high for the Hoyas. Kiselick also recorded his FCS-leading fourth field goal block of the season. Georgetown leads the nation with eight blocked kicks this season.
 
LaQuan Lambert, Lehigh, Sr., DB, Chichester, Pa./Chichester
Lambert finished with a season-high eight tackles, 1.5 TFL or 10 yards and 1.5 sacks for a loss of 17 yards and a fumble recovery in Lehigh’s victory over Lafayette. Lambert’s first sack came on the last play of the first half with Lafayette at the Lehigh two-yard line.
 
Niko Thorpe, Fordham, Jr., LB, Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic
Thorpe had a season-high 12 tackles, including 2.0 TFL and 1.0 sack to help Fordham defeat Bucknell. Thorpe also forced a fumble for a defense that allowed just 13 of Bucknell’s 22 points.
 
Pat Afriyie, Colgate, Jr., DL, Sandy Hook, Conn./Sandy Hook
Afriyie finished with six tackles, 2.0 TFL and 1.0 sack to help Colgate hold off Georgetown on Saturday. Afriyie finished the season with a League-leading 21.0 TFL and 10.0 sacks.
