Three Patriot League men's and women's basketball student-athletes have been selected as one of 30 candidates in each sport for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, it was announced on Tuesday. Army's Jarrell Brown and Cara Enright, along with Bucknell's Hope Foster, will represent the Patriot League in the selection process.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award was launched during the 2001-02 season to honor the attributes of college basketball seniors who remain committed to their university and pursue the many rewards that a senior season and complete college education brings.
Now in its seventh year for basketball, the award has developed into the nation's premier tribute for college seniors. Since originating with basketball, Lowe's has expanded the award to include a total of eight NCAA sports.
Brown, the lone men's basketball nominee from the Patriot League, is the senior leader for a Black Knights team that was selected to finish sixth in the League this year. The senior from Cleveland, Ohio is leading the Black Knights in points per game (21.3), rebounds (33) and minutes per game (34). Brown currently ranks third in the nation in three-point field goals per game with 4.9. In Army's game against Hartford on Nov. 28, Brown became the 26th player in Army history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark for a career.
Enright has been a leader on the court for the Black Knights for several seasons now, and continues in that role this season. The senior from Norco, Calif. leads Army in scoring with 14.0 points per game, as the team has posted a 5-3 record so far this season. She currently ranks as only one of two active Patriot League student-athletes to have at least 1,000 career points, and she ranks second on Army's career list with 1,441.
Foster, the 2007 Patriot League Women's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year, has been a force in the middle for the Bison for several seasons. The 2006 Patriot League Player of the Year is currently averaging 10.9 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game, and has also tallied 18 blocks so far this season. She needs just 16 points to reach 1,000 for her career, and she is also just 31 blocks away from tying the Patriot League record for blocks in a career.
From the list of 30 nominees, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in January 2008. Those ten names will be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote during the NCAA Tournament in March. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient.
Lowe's, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, will award the winners with a trophy during the men's and women's NCAA Final Four weekends. The men's event will take place April 5-7 in San Antonio, Texas, while the women's event will take place April 6-8 in Tampa, Fla.
