CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Patriot League schools once again excelled in NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program (APP) Public Recognition Awards on Wednesday, with 92 League-sponsored teams honored for finishing in the top 10 percent of their sport in the most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) data.

Bucknell led all schools with 21 teams receiving Public Recognition Awards, with all but two of those competing in the Patriot League. The Bison also placed third in the nation in Public Recognition Awards, behind only Dartmouth (26) and Brown (22). Lafayette (17), Holy Cross (14) and Colgate (12) followed the Bison with each of their teams that received awards competing in the Patriot League, which finished second among all Division I conferences in Public Recognition Awards.

At least one team was recognized in all 24 Patriot League sports. A League-high seven were honored in women's tennis, with six in both men's basketball and men's cross country and five in softball, women's cross country, women's rowing, women's swimming and diving and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. There were 39 men's teams and 53 women's squads honored out of the Patriot League.

American, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Loyola are part of a group of 58 schools which have at least one team that has received a Public Recognition Award in each of the nine years of the program. Bucknell has seven programs which have earned the honor every season, while Lafayette has six and Holy Cross and Lehigh each total four.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

The 1,049 teams publicly recognized for high achievement represent 631 women's teams and 418 men's or mixed squads. In 2013, 976 teams were recognized. The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport, with the majority of top 10 teams earning a perfect APR. A total of 275 Division I schools (and seven in other divisions who have a sport competing in Division I) placed at least one team on the top APR list, up 19 from last year.

The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-2012 and 2012-13 academic years.

APRs for all Division I teams will be released May 14. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and they also can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
